Is Is Safe To Use Propecia As A Hair Loss Drug?

March 6th, 2010

Propecia is an oral prescription drug which is approved by the FDA. Propecia is popular for the treatment of mild male pattern balding, particularly on the crown and mid-scalp areas of the head. Propecia is sometimes used in small doses to treat prostatic hyperplasia and in much larger doses for the treatment of prostate cancer. Some clinical trials have proved that Propecia does prevent further hair loss, and in some cases has lead to hair regrowth. However, results do vary depending on the severity of the case, and it may not be possible to re-grow all the hair you have lost.

But are there any side affects to using Propecia?
One of the major reasons why some men are affected by male pattern baldness or hair loss, known as androgenetic alopecia in medical terms, is excessive levels of a chemical called DHT in their scalp. DHT shrinks hair follicles so that they are no longer visible. So the affected hair follicle are further prevented from shrinking. Finasteride, a drug that was originally used in the treatment of prostate cancer, is the main component of Propecia. The drug is generally prescribed in doses of 5mg and is particularly successful in combating male hair loss in the crown of the head.

Propecia causing erectile dysfunction?

It is slightly contentious, but some men have claimed erectile dysfunction and poor libido on this hair loss products. Can this possibly be true? Specialists have claimed that there are less than 1% of users who have reported problems? Skimming around some Internet forums I have noticed plenty of men complaining of suffering some sort of sexual failure whilst on the drug.
