Male Pattern Baldness – Is It Reversible?

March 17th, 2010

By far the most common cause of male hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia, commonly referred to as Male Pattern Baldness or MPB. Affecting an estimated 85% of men over the age of 50, Male Pattern Baldness is an inherited condition, usually the result of hormonal imbalances and results in the characteristic receding hairline and visibly thinning hair on the crown of the scalp.

Androgenetic Alopecia is cause by the metabolism of the Testosterone hormone into Dihydrotestosterone or DHT for short. DHT collects at the roots of hair follicles and blocks the flow of vital nutrients to. As the follicles become starved of the nourishment they need to flourish, their growth cycle is gradually reduced until they are unable to grow new hair.

As more and more follicles are weakened, the damage starts to become visible. First the crown starts to thin with visible bald spots. The hairline recedes further, eventually blending into the already affected crown. In due course, the crown becomes totally bald with only a thin ring of hair remaining around the back and sides.

This characteristic pattern of hair loss is where the term Male Pattern Baldness comes from and is a sure indication of DHT damage. Other conditions such as Folliculitis or Alopecia Areata result in other distinct hair loss patterns, so the conditions are difficult to be mis-diagnosed.

Reducing the amount of DHT present around the hair follicles would seem to be the most logical treatment for the condition and this is exactly the tack medical science has taken. Clinical studies into the effectiveness of DHT blockers are numerous and the evidence supporting this route is numerous. The FDA has gone to far as to add one such DHT blocker, Minoxidil, to its list of approved hair regrowth ingredients.

DHT inhibitors also occur in nature. Extracts from the berries of the Saw Palmetto palm for example have been proven to fight DHT production. The extract from the Saw Palmetto berries are rich in Fatty Acids and Phytosterols and are known to reduce the activity of the 5-alpha Reductase enzyme, responsible for the production of DHT. The Fatty Acids in the berries also prevent existing DHT from binding with hair follicles, further reducing hair loss.

Other plant extracts such as oil extracts from Pumpkin Seeds and Nettle Root also have valuable properties as DHT blockers. Particularly in combination with Saw Palmetto, these natural DHT inhibitors provide effective ingredients in the treatment of Dihydrotestosterone induced hair loss.

Androgenetic Alopecia is a complex condition and the best remedy is a combination hair regrowth treatment. Reducing or even eliminating the creation of DHT and also providing the proper nutrients for hair follicles to thrive and have healthy growth cycles.

An effective hair regrowth treatment would include FDA approved ingredients such as Minoxidil and time tested herbal extracts such as Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed Oil and Nettle Root to combat DHT hair loss. Ideally, other nutrients such as Ginseng, Vitamins and Minerals would also be included to nourish and strengthen hair follicles and overall hair health.

Alopecia Can Cause Depression And Anxiety For Some Patients

December 8th, 2009

Everyone experiences hair loose daily. While combing or brushing the hair, there are always a number of hairs that get plucked from their roots. Fortunately it’s not enough to cause distress because the loss is minimal. However, it is different for patients who are suffering from hair loss or alopecia. Some people who suffer from Alopecia may develop anxiety and or depression. Many of those who experience Alopecia for the first time are the ones becoming most affected by all its implications. Some feel shy about having Alopecia making it difficult for them to make friends. Some refuse to mingle with people, becoming anxious and agitated when in the crowd, for fear of their hair situation being noticed and be talked about. Others simply refuse to see people at all. While this is a normal reaction at first, the inability of some people with Alopecia to come out from their gloomy place, the worse it becomes for them. Finding the “cure” for Alopecia has caused many of us to read and try every manual, website, hair product out there not to mention the many doctor consultations. The problem with Alopecia is that for many who have it, have it for life. Some people experienced a bald spot and then hair would simply grow back even without treatment and never has it happen again. But for some their hair grows back again, sometimes for years posing no problems. Then something changes and we find ourselves becoming bald again sometimes to the extent of losing all of the hair or sometimes leaving just a few strands in their scalp.

Those of us with Alopecia have different ways in dealing with it. There are people who refuse to call it a disease because for them they don’t feel any pain from it. There are those who accepted the fact that they would go hairless or bald for life and then simply lived with it. They go about their daily activities studying, working, going to the malls, theaters, parties or just anything people do, never minding the stares and whispers and even the outright rudeness of some people who discriminate against them. Some even feel lucky and happy and are successful in their pursuit of their respective careers.

Anxiety and depression cause other people with Alopecia to remain in their shells and some even refuse to go out. Their Alopecia causes them to live a secluded life. But they have to know that many others like us are able to live up to the challenges of the condition. Forums and support groups are available for us all the time. They just have to know they are not alone in this struggle and that there is help.
